Western Digital storage update: WD My Book enclosure and WD Blue 8TB hard drive with a rising price trend chart

Western Digital Is Sold Out Through 2026, Here's What That Means for Hard Drive Prices in the UAE

Western Digital shares jumped 12.5% to $548.39 on 22 July 2026, and the reason isn't a new product, it's a supply problem in the company's favor. Management has confirmed that its entire hard drive production run for 2026 is already sold out, with long-term contracts locked in through 2027 and 2028. For anyone shopping for storage this year, that single fact explains a lot about why HDD prices haven't been moving in the direction buyers were hoping for.

Sold out two years in advance

Being sold out for the rest of the current year is one thing, having customers already committed through 2028 is another. It signals that the hyperscale cloud providers and AI data centers buying in bulk aren't treating this as a temporary spike, they're locking in capacity years ahead because they expect demand, and prices, to keep climbing. That kind of forward buying leaves very little slack in the market for everyday desktop, NAS, and external drive buyers competing for the same production lines.

Why the market reacted now

The stock move coincided with reports that Western Digital has restarted merger talks with Japan's Kioxia Holdings. A combined company would pair Western Digital's hard drive business with Kioxia's NAND flash manufacturing, creating a single storage supplier large enough to compete directly with Samsung and SK Hynix across both hard drives and SSDs. Nothing is finalized, but the market's reaction, WDC is still up 218% year to date despite pulling back from a June peak of $746, shows how much weight investors are putting on Western Digital's pricing power right now.

The bigger pricing picture

This sits on top of a trend that's been building for months. Industry-wide HDD contract prices have already climbed roughly 46% since September 2025, with the most recent quarterly negotiation producing the sharpest sequential increase in nearly eight quarters. None of the current forecasts point to that reversing before Western Digital reports its next earnings on 5 August 2026, where analysts expect revenue growth of close to 100% year over year, itself a sign of how much pricing has moved, not just volume.

What this means if you're buying in the UAE

For anyone in the UAE planning a NAS build, an external backup drive, or a storage refresh for a small server, the practical read is the same one that's applied to memory and SSD pricing all year: capacity that's already sold out at the manufacturer doesn't get cheaper while you wait. With production committed two years out and a possible Kioxia tie-up adding further uncertainty to the supply chain, current pricing is close to the best case available right now rather than a peak about to correct.
